Case

Mata v. Avianca

Lawyers filed a brief citing court decisions that a chatbot had invented. The court (opinion of 22 June 2023) said that using a reliable AI tool is not improper in itself but lawyers keep a gatekeeping duty to check filings, found bad faith because they kept defending the fake cases after being challenged, and imposed a joint penalty of USD 5,000.
