Case

Jack Welch at General Electric (1981–2001)

Jack Welch was chairman and CEO of General Electric from April 1981 until September 2001. GE puts its market capitalisation at about $14 billion when he took over and more than $410 billion when he retired (GE News); CNBC gives the same end figure but a starting point of $12 billion. Welch required every business to be first or second in its market and launched the Work-Out programme to cut bureaucracy; by his own account the workforce fell from 411,000 to 299,000 in his first five years (CNBC).
