When to use it, and when not to

Use it when

Use it to test whether the supply chain fits the competitive strategy. Chopra groups three logistical drivers (facilities, inventory, transportation) and three cross-functional drivers (information, sourcing, pricing).

Pitfalls

Pitfall

Adjusting one driver in isolation. Chopra stresses that the six interact: more facilities make a chain more responsive but need more inventory, and faster transport can cut inventory but costs more. The aim is to structure all six to reach the desired responsiveness at the lowest possible cost.
